A LABOUR MP has broken ranks to call for Sir Keir Starmer to resign amid the Downing Street “psychodrama”.
Backbencher Jonathan Brash insisted the Lord Mandelson affair has led him to call for the to quit saying it’s not “if, but when” he leaves.
His intervention comes as Number 10 have been unable to shake off the controversy around the ex-Labour grandee’s appointment to the UK ambassador job.
Two other Clive Lewis and Peter Lamb have also called on him to walk away from office.
When asked why should resign: “Why? Because ultimately, we’ve become completely consumed by this turmoil at a time when that is not what the British public are focused on.
“They are focused on their . They are focused on the . It’s a reasonable thing to set a timetable to get this done in an orderly way, because we have got a very, very big job ahead of us.”
Brash also told GB News that nobody “reasonably expects” Sir Keir to lead Labour into the next election. Sir Keir became Labour leader in 2020 and led the party to a massive majority in 2024.
It comes after his premiership has become engulfed by the Mandelson scandal and a series of damaging policy u-turns.
Mr Brash, who represents Hartlepool, added: “I’ve got to be clear, I am completely fed up to the back teeth of this psychodrama in Westminster, the own goals that are coming from the heart of this government.
“Meanwhile, we’ve got fantastic Labour councillors, canvassers, activists up and down the country, working hard and delivering for their constituencies, like mine in Hartlepool, facing in the shadow of this absolute mess. They just need to get a grip.
“I’m completely fed up about it, and I think it’s got to the point now where I genuinely think that, as far as the Prime Minister is concerned, it’s not a case of if, it’s when.
“I just think we need to get a handle on this, because people out there are worried about their cost of living, they’re worried about their NHS, they’re worried about crime on their streets, and we’re completely consumed by this scandal, and it’s completely unacceptable.
“And I’m sure you can tell, I’m quite angry about it.
“Ultimately, we’re in a situation now where I don’t think anyone reasonably expects the to lead the party into the next election.
“I think that we have to refocus this government on the priorities of the British people, refocus it on delivering, which fantastic candidates and councils are doing up and down the country right now in constituencies like Hartlepool, where they’re bringing investment.”
“You heard from the Prime Minister himself in there, where he said that, nothing will distract him from delivering from our country.
“I mean, you know what this government is doing to deliver for working people, from tackling the cost of living, cutting NHS waiting lists, to investing in local communities to restore pride.
When asked if the PM going to resign before next election, the spokesman replied: “No.”
Meanwhile, Sir Keir ex-chief of staff Morgan McSweeney has been summoned to appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee of MPs next Tuesday amid the Peter Mandelson vetting scandal.
Mr McSweeney, widely regarded as a protege of Lord Mandelson, resigned in February over his part in the peer’s appointment to the Washington DC posting.
