MICHAEL CARRICK could have ended up in the dugout of another former club if he wasn’t snapped up by Manchester United.

The ex- boss, 44, was unveiled as United’s interim manager last week after pipping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the job.

Carrick had been on the market for seven months after Riverside chiefs axed him in June.

And he could have pounced on a different opportunity if Ruben Amorim’s sacking hadn’t opened up a vacancy at Old Trafford.

According to talkSPORT , approached Carrick about the possibility taking charge until the end of the season.

The Spurs hierarchy is thought to be contingency planning as pressure mounts on current manager Thomas Frank.

Certain members of the Tottenham board have seen enough from the Dane, who was under fire even before consecutive losses to , and relegation strugglers .

And reports suggest that Carrick was one of the contenders to step in if a change was made.

The former England midfielder scored twice in 75 games across two seasons at Spurs in the mid-noughties.

He then moved on to United, where he won five Premier League titles and a Champions League.

Frank will take charge of Tottenham’s European clash with Borussia Dortmund tonight – and he desperately needs a result.

Spurs and BVB are level on 11 points and outside the automatic knockout places with two league phase games to play.

The North Londoners have enjoyed home Champions League matches this season despite their dreary Premier League form at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And Frank wants the fans to help them turn things around, saying in his latest press conference: “They are crucial.

“I don’t see any club performing well without the fans and it is fair that it hasn’t been smooth or as fluid as we want. A little bit too much up and down.

“Unfortunately, it is a results business and emotions are in this as well. There are a lot of signs that this is going the right way.

“We still need to find a way to get over the line and I think we are much closer than we think.”
