This result kickstarted the Sir revolution and was his first of an incredible 38 trophies for the Red Devils.
Martin – a former United trainee and then first-team left-back – has been impressed by , 44, who arrived as caretaker head coach in January following the sacking of .
The former England midfielder has delivered for the club but outgoing boss is heavily liked by the United hierarchy.
Martin, 58, watches all the home games in his role with the club’s match-day hospitality and he told SunSport: “Carrick’s been unbelievable.
“They have got to give him the job because the criteria was to get into the Champions League. He’s done that.
“And after last season finishing 15th, it’s been incredible. I actually drove down to the Final in Bilbao and it was dreadful.
“I thought, I don’t know where we’re going from here. Amorim stayed on for a little while longer and then Carrick came in.
“The whole thing just changed. The whole attitude around the club changed.
“He gave the lads a few days off. Training was more enjoyable. That’s what it was like when we were at United with Sir Alex.
“During the week the training was enjoyable. Match-day, obviously, you’ve got to be disciplined, you’ve got to be full on and concentrating.
“But he’s made a massive difference.”
Carrick has won 10 of his 14 matches in charge, with two draws and two losses and there is a feelgood factor around the place.
No more so than on Sunday when scored the winner in a over at .
United co-owner has a big call to make this summer about who will stand in the dugout during the next campaign.
Martin continued: “Carrick’s been at the club for a long time. He’s got the right people with him as well.

“I was at the club for 12 years as a player but I’ve been around the club for a long time.
“I know the DNA of the place and the fact that we like bringing young players through. That’s been going for 80-90 years now.
“That’s got to continue and I think Michael knows what it’s about. He’s obviously got Sir Alex to contact if he needs to speak to anyone.
“If you wanted advice off somebody, you’d go to Sir Alex, wouldn’t you?
“You have got to give Amorim a bit of credit for the lads he brought in with (Matheus) Cunha, (Bryan) Mbeumo and (Benjamin) Sesko. People like that. They’ve done really well.
“Carrick is a really good character. He’s quite calm underneath it all. You see that in his press conferences.
“He’s quite calm but he’s got the right people around him. He’s had some experience at Middlesbrough.
“United is a massive job. We all know that. People have tried and failed. That’s what he’s up against now.
“He’s up against trying to make Manchester United a Premier League-winning side. I think he can do it. Hopefully he can do it.
“Hopefully he can carry the club forward for the next five years at least anyway.”
