D’MANI MELLOR experienced a taste of the big leagues at Manchester United and now aims to achieve one of the greatest shocks in FA Cup history.
Macclesfield, competing in the sixth tier of the non-league system, will host the reigning champions in Saturday’s televised third-round match.
Manchester United academy graduate D’Mani Mellor is eager to make FA Cup history with Macclesfield.
Mellor previously played alongside other notable names at Man Utd.
For 25-year-old Silkmen striker Mellor, this is a chance to showcase his talent as he works to revitalize his career after an anterior cruciate ligament injury sidelined him for a year before he left Old Trafford.
After spending two years at Wycombe following his departure from the Red Devils, Mellor still aspires to return to the highest level of the game.
He remarked, “Every game I play is significant because you never know who is watching, and it’s an opportunity to shine. This match, however, holds a special meaning for the club and every player involved.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity as it's broadcast live, and it’s a day that will be memorable for us.
“There are always surprises in the FA Cup, and hopefully, we can be one of them. The team is eager to put on a performance against the holders.
“The pressure is on Palace, and while it’s a free hit for us, we’re determined to win and make history for the club.
“It will be challenging since they are a Premier League team. Their players will be more astute, faster, and sharper, and their fitness levels will outmatch ours.
“However, football is a unpredictable sport, and you have to find a way to win. A small mistake can change everything... you may only need one chance.”
Mellor expressed that the Silkmen’s team spirit is strong after achieving their third promotion in four seasons since the club was reestablished in 2020 following the collapse of Macclesfield Town.
Last season, they were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League, Premier Division under the management of Savage.
Mellor stated, “We achieved promotion with a record points total for the league and broke numerous other records. It was an incredible season filled with unforgettable moments.
“These experiences helped forge a special bond among the players. Most of the squad remained, making it a unique team with immense potential for future success.”
Savage departed for Forest Green Rovers in the summer, and Mellor’s younger brother John transitioned from player to manager.
Mellor commented, “He’s in a new role now, and we all want to perform well for him because of the support he has given us.”
This marks Macclesfield’s sixth tie this season, with their journey beginning in September.
Mellor noted, “It has been tough for us since we’ve had to play significantly more matches than other teams. This makes it even more special as we've managed to win games after being behind and fought back, leading to this moment.”
He has been impressed with the quality of non-league football since joining the club at the start of last season.
He remarked, “It’s often viewed as a lower standard, but it has improved significantly, and in our division, we face several full-time teams.
“There are many talented players in these leagues who go on to achieve great things, as seen with Jamie Vardy and more recently with Antoine Semenyo, who played at Bath City.”
Mellor joined Manchester United at the age of eight and progressed through every level, with his debut as a substitute in a Europa League match against Astana in Kazakhstan being a highlight.

He shared, “That was one of the best moments of my life. It felt surreal waiting to come on.
“Being a United supporter as a child made it even more special, and it’s a moment I will always cherish.”
Mellor’s youth team at United included talents like Angel Gomes and James Garner.
He said, “I had the privilege of sharing the pitch with them, which was quite intimidating.”
Outside of football, Mellor hosts a successful podcast titled ‘More Than a Match’ with football coach Ryan Hopper.
He added, “I share my experiences about dealing with injuries, loans, moving away from home at a young age, and the challenges of receiving large sums of money too early.”
