Mayor Andy Burnham: Man Utd's New £2 Billion Old Trafford 'Very Likely' to Host Major Sporting Event

MANCHESTER UNITED’s new £2billion Old Trafford has been backed to host a major sporting event.

The are hoping to have made the move into the state-of-the-art stadium by 2030.

The completion date is still viewed as optimistic, but mayor Andy Burnham is confident the stadium will be useful.

He is a part of the task force behind the construction of the new stadium, which is hoped to become a “Wembley of the North”.

Burnham wants the new 100,000-seater home of United to be one of the host stadiums for the 2035 .

He revealed his aim while appearing on The Added Time podcast.

He said: “It’s a major growth project for the whole of the Northwest.

“Amd the enticing prospect in my mind is if we really get it moving, I think there’s a fairly high likelihood that we will be hosting the women’s World Cup in 2035.

“Imagine a final at that New Trafford, new Old Trafford.

“It would be quite something to aim for, wouldn’t it?”

Funding for the lucrative project remains a point of contention.

United are hoping to use government cash for the wider infrastructure of a development which will also include 17,000 homes.

Last month, Old Trafford chiefs still needed to source their own funding for the stadium itself .

The in 2035 will be played across , Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The tournament will be contested by 48 teams and will be the second of that size following its expansion from 2031.
