A MAN who was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a street robbery has tragically died.

Gelson Fernandes, also known as Matchas, had been treated after the late-night attack in on Sunday.

The “loving father”, in his 30s, was targeted at around 4am on Blackfriars Road, said.

He reported the robbery and was taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

Tragically, cops confirmed Mr Fernandes’ condition deteriorated and he sadly died on Tuesday.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow to establish whether his cause of death was connected to the robbery.

Cops have since charged Osvaldo Semedo, 26, with robbery in connection with the incident.

He appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ on Wednesday morning and has been remanded into custody.

It is believed Mr Fernandes, from Cape Verde, was married with children, as reported by the Eastern Daily Press .

He was well-known and much-loved in the African Latino community for hosting traditional parties.

Friend Nuno Almeida paid a heartfelt tribute which read: “Today I pay tribute to a brilliant man, Matchas Fernandes.

“A devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend, and a truly hardworking soul, Matchas was loved by everyone who had the privilege to know him. His kindness, strength, and good heart will never be forgotten.

“My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. May his memory continue to shine brightly in all our hearts.”

Another pal wrote: “Gelson Fernandes, mostly known as Matchas Fernandes, was an event promoter.

“He promoted a lot of Afro parties in Yarmouth for his community. He was always very friendly and everybody was always friendly and nice with him too.”
