A major motorway has been closed after a lorry transporting hay caught fire, causing significant travel disruptions for rush-hour commuters.

Drivers on the M4 near Slough, Berkshire, have been alerted to substantial delays as clouds of smoke continue to billow over the busy roadway.

Emergency services have been dispatched to the blazing HGV, situated between Junction 6, for Slough, and Junction 8/9, for Maidenhead.

National Highways stated: “The M4 in Berkshire is closed westbound between J6 (Slough) and J8/9 (Maidenhead) due to an HGV fire.

“The HGV was loaded with hay, so fire crews will need to douse the load to prevent it from reigniting.

“Service providers are present with a grab lorry to assist in removing the barrels from the trailer.

“This action aims to prevent the fire from spreading to unaffected barrels and to aid in extinguishing those already ablaze.

“National Highways has resources on site to help manage traffic.”
