Switch to laundry detergent for spot carpet treatments to save money, advised Southern Living yesterday.
Its thrifty advice column explained that while there are many fancy carpet shampoos in stores, you can apply a cheaper alternative instead.
“Dilute laundry detergent and apply it directly to the carpet stain,” said Allison Evans, co-founder of Branch Basics .
Her website is keen for Americans to ditch toxins in their house, and help protect their health by using similar alternatives.
When it comes to tackling carpet stains, simply use a brush or cloth to rub a small amount of detergent directly into the mark.
Next, wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove any residue.
There is one proviso when using regular household laundry detergent as an alternative, however.
It’s best to use a low suds product.
For those wanting to use it in a carpet cleaning machine, there is further advice from Evans.
“Add a small amount of laundry detergent – about 1 teaspoon – to the solution container, fill the rest with water [and] use the solution in the machine as normal,” she recommended.
