Sheikh Tunde Abbas Abdul-Azeez, the founder of the Markaz-ul-Uloom School of Arabic and Islamic Studies, has urged President Bola Tinubu to make the fight against insecurity a top priority, cautioning that some of the nation's challenges are exacerbated by individuals within government structures.
He also warned against narratives that promote religious division, asserting that there is no genocide occurring in Nigeria.
The cleric shared these insights during the school's 40th-anniversary celebration in Lagos, themed “Markaz-ul-Uloom: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”
Sheikh Abdul-Azeez appealed to President Tinubu to concentrate on restoring peace instead of engaging in political strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Life is too precious to be politicized,” he remarked, adding that the ongoing insecurity in the country continues because 'those who fund and manage terrorists have infiltrated government structures.'
The scholar called on both the President and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to intensify their efforts to safeguard lives and property.
“This is indeed a challenging time for Nigeria. I pray that Allah grants us peace of mind and internal security,” he expressed.
In response to recent international allegations of Christian persecution in the country, Sheikh Abdul-Azeez highlighted that attacks affect all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations.
“There is no genocide in Nigeria. Terrorists are targeting Christians, Muslims, and non-Muslims alike,” he stated, urging religious leaders and citizens to resist divisive narratives that could undermine national unity.
He underscored the teachings of Islam regarding tolerance, saying, “These individuals are not true Muslims because the Qur’an prohibits the killing of innocent lives.”
The cleric also encouraged Nigerians to assist security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities.
“Let us take responsibility for our own security. If you notice anything unusual, report it to the police or military. Cooperation is essential,” he advised.
Sheikh Abdul-Azeez noted that Lagos remains relatively peaceful, which allowed the anniversary event to proceed without any incidents.
