Notable politicians in Delta State have transitioned from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a strategic move to challenge the dominant ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and to redefine the political landscape in the state.
Among those who switched parties was the LP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Deacon Kawhariebie Ken Pela, along with candidates for the National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government.
The defection ceremony took place in Asaba and drew a significant and enthusiastic crowd from throughout the state. This shift follows a similar trend at the national level, where the LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, recently joined the ADC in Enugu.
During the event, Elder Festus Igbinoba, ADC National Chief Whip, representing the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, stated that Ken Pela’s transition to the ADC reflects a larger movement of principled leaders joining the party.
“This is a convergence of values. The ADC continues to attract leaders committed to discipline, institutional growth, and governance that prioritizes the people,” he remarked. He expressed pleasure at welcoming these influential members and encouraged newcomers to adhere to the party’s constitution and collaborate towards electoral success and effective governance.
Senator Andrew Uchendu, ADC Deputy National Chairman, also welcomed Ken Pela, acknowledging that his decision showcases the party’s increasing appeal across the nation.
“The ADC is honored to welcome a leader of Ken Pela’s stature. His choice reinforces our commitment to offering Nigerians credible leadership options grounded in integrity and service,” Uchendu stated.
The chief host and Delta State Chairman of the ADC, Austin Okolie, greeted distinguished guests from national, zonal, and state executives, as well as stakeholders and former members of the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement led by Deacon Pela.
According to Okolie, “Today’s gathering is historic. It signifies a significant political realignment in Delta State and sends a strong message to Nigeria that a new progressive coalition is forming in preparation for the 2027 general elections.”
He further added that the presence of national and zonal representatives demonstrated that the ADC is not only expanding at the grassroots level but is also fully aligned with the party’s national vision.
In an impassioned address, Ken Pela elaborated on his reasons for the defection, emphasizing the necessity for politics rooted in integrity, service, and institutional reform rather than personality-driven loyalty and empty promises.
He criticized the current political culture that favors familiarity over competence and expressed concern about the growing concentration of power, which he believes undermines democratic pluralism.
“Delta State is abundantly blessed but hampered by a loss of trust and a political culture that rewards noise over substance. We require a politics grounded in responsibility and service. That is why I have chosen the ADC, a platform that prioritizes values over individuals and evaluates governance based on results, not rhetoric,” he declared.
Ken Pela also pointed out Nigeria’s broader issues, including widespread insecurity and economic difficulties, noting that over 130 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty. He called for a united effort to restore trust and hope.
The declaration was formalized with Pela’s signed resignation from the LP and his commitment to the ADC’s constitution, values, and ideals, underscoring his personal pledge to integrity, accountability, and responsible leadership.
