The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has elected new executive officers who will lead the party for the next four years.
The election took place through a consensus arrangement, resulting in the selection of Alexander Ombugu as Chairman, Bulus Sakks as Secretary, and Esther Arishi as Treasurer, among others.
John Shammah, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, explained after the state congress that the processes leading to the election were sanctioned by the national leadership of the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He noted the necessity for the party to address its internal issues to improve its chances of success in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Shammah elaborated that the party has faced numerous challenges, which he termed as man-made.
“One thing I am pleased about is that during our discussions, we spoke candidly with one another, and many individuals expressed their thoughts honestly because we believe the party must progress,” he stated, clarifying the rationale for adopting a consensus approach in the election.
Shammah also announced the names of other elected executives, including Isiaka Okpu as Financial Secretary, Ablaku Anthony as Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ayaka as Auditor, Hanatu Giwa as Women Leader, Iliya Timidige as Youth Leader, Silas Yileni as Organizing Secretary, and Barr. Edogo Zakari as Legal Adviser, among others.
Mohammed Hamza, acting Head of the Election and Political Party Monitoring Department at INEC in Nasarawa State, expressed his satisfaction with the electoral process.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Alexander Ombugu, expressed his gratitude to the national leadership, the state congress delegates, and party members and supporters for the opportunity to serve over the next four years.
He urged members and supporters across the 13 local government areas of the state to provide him with the necessary support and encouragement to ensure the party’s growth and success.
As Chairman, he assured that he would implement an open-door policy, where every member is included, and everyone’s opinions are valued.
