The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA) issued a firm warning on Saturday regarding what it termed increasing authoritarian tendencies in Kano State.

Earlier on Saturday, Kwankwaso responded to reports suggesting that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is about to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following the effort to reclaim Kano from the party.

Reports indicate that Governor Yusuf’s defection to the national ruling party could be imminent, a change that may result in Kwankwaso and the NNPP losing the only state they secured in the 2023 general elections.

KPRA accused Kwankwaso of attempting to exert excessive control over the current administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The organization stated that Kwankwaso is attempting to monopolize the political landscape of the state, labeling such behavior as a perilous shift toward authoritarianism.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Maikano Danlami, the organization asserted that Kwankwaso’s actions pose a significant threat to democratic governance and undermine the authority of the government elected by the citizens of Kano State.

KPRA emphasized that when a former governor seeks to influence or control the actions of a sitting government, it contradicts the will of the electorate and weakens the democratic institutions within the state.

The organization stated: “We must remind Kwankwaso that the people of Kano have already expressed their choice through the ballot, and that decision must be honored.”

“Kwankwaso’s attempts to manipulate the political situation in Kano signify a dangerous drift toward authoritarian rule. His actions imply a desire to dominate the current government, silence the voices of the people, and disregard the democratic process that elevated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to power.”

“This is not merely a political strategy; it is a breach of the rights of Kano citizens, who deserve the autonomy to shape their own future without interference from antiquated political practices.”

“The Kano People’s Rights Alliance believes that the citizens of Kano must retain the authority to determine their destiny. We reject the idea that a former governor should dictate the actions of an elected leader.”

“The time for imposing personal will on the populace must come to an end. We urge Rabiu Kwankwaso to respect democratic principles and allow Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities without interference.”

“It is time for Kwankwaso to step back and permit the current administration to execute the mandate freely granted by the people. We also encourage the citizens of Kano to remain vigilant and aware of early signs of authoritarianism.”

“It is our collective duty to defend democracy and ensure that leaders remain accountable to the people they serve. Fear or intimidation must not silence our voices or undermine our rights.”

“The Kano People’s Rights Alliance calls upon all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political parties, and the media, to unite with us in safeguarding democracy and protecting the rights of the people.”

“Together, we can resist the encroachment of authoritarian control and ensure that the will of the people is honored.”

The organization further urged the residents of Kano State to stay alert and aware of early indicators of dictatorship, emphasizing that the defense of democracy is a shared responsibility.

“The era of outdated political interference is over; the people of Kano deserve the freedom to shape their future within a just and democratic framework,” the statement concluded.
