Ms Badenoch claimed study is “activist ideology masquerading as research”.

She said that “vulnerable” youngsters will face irreversible “damage” if the trial goes ahead.

The NHS study, confirmed last week, will see 200 children, possibly as young as eight, given

In a letter to Mr Streeting, a furious Ms Badenoch said: “This trial is borne of the discredited, yet still seemingly entrenched, belief in some quarters that a child can be ‘born in the wrong body’ or go through the ‘wrong’ puberty, and that a normal puberty can be ‘paused’ without causing irreparable harm to children.

“We reject this premise entirely.”

The study was recommended by the Cass Review into medicine in the NHS.

Baroness Cass concluded there was “remarkably weak” evidence to back the use of puberty blockers in kids who don’t like their gender.

She said more research was required.

Researchers at King’s College, which is running the trial, admitted kids could face potential harm to their brain and sexual development.

They added the risks of not prescribing the medication include and self-harm.

Responding to the leader, Mr Streeting posted on X: “I’m surprised by this letter.

“The Conservatives commissioned the Cass Review and accepted its recommendations in full.

“I did, too, and am implementing it. I’m keen to maintain a cross-party approach on such a sensitive issue.”
