The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the early morning assault on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where gunmen killed the Vice Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducted 25 female students.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NANS President Olushola Oladoja characterized the incident, which took place on International Students’ Day, as a significant setback for the student community.
“The National Association of Nigerian Students is profoundly distressed by the news of the attack, where armed intruders invaded the school grounds at dawn, violently took the life of the Vice Principal, and abducted 25 innocent female students,” the association remarked.
NANS pointed out that the attack marred the day intended to honor students’ perseverance and cautioned that the escalating trend of school abductions in northern Nigeria demands immediate action.
The association urged the federal and Kebbi State governments, along with security agencies, to utilize all available resources to ensure the swift rescue of the kidnapped students. It also called for enhanced security measures around schools, especially girls’ boarding facilities, and the dismantling of criminal networks responsible for these attacks.
NANS extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased Vice Principal and expressed solidarity with the families of the abducted students. “Our thoughts are with the parents and families of the kidnapped students; we stand with you,” the statement concluded.
