JIM WALLACE, Scotland’s first ever deputy first minister, has died aged 71.
The ex-Scottish leader died after suffering complications as a result of surgery, his have said.

Lord Wallace, who served as Holyrood’s first ever deputy first minister, was undergoing a procedure at the Royal Infirmary of on Thursday.
But he sadly died as a result of complications from what was a scheduled major operation.
His heartbroken wife, Rosie Wallace, said: “The family are very shocked by Jim’s death. It was all so sudden.
“He was still incredibly active in a whole host of areas.”
Lord Wallace served as the Deputy First Minister of between 1999 and 2005.
Throughout this period, he twice served as acting First Minister – in 2000 and 2001.
The first instance came after Donald Dewar’s death in 2000 and then again the following year following Henry McLeish’s resignation.
He also served as a Liberal Democrat life peer in the House of Lords since 2007 – he served as a leader of the party in the upper chamber of from 2013 to 2016.
Born in Dumfriesshire, southern Scotland, in 1954, his career in politics was based from the north of the country.
Wallace was the Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats for 13 years between 1992 and 2005.
He was the MP for Orkney and Shetland from 1983 to 2021 and was a Member of the Scottish Parliament for Orkney from 1999 to 2007.
