JENSON BUTTON has revealed the bizarre nickname given to him by his former race engineer.

The 2009 Formula One world champion was renowned as one of the smoothest drivers on the track in his day.

However, there was actually far more than met the eye with the Brit’s famous style.

Speaking at an event hosted by global ticket marketplace, Viagogo, was asked what current driver on the grid he felt most reflected his style.

The 46-year-old said: “I would probably say Oscar Piastri, probably in terms of his style of driving, yes.

“Yeah, he’s probably the the closest. It’s always very difficult when I don’t have the data in front of me to really understand what people are doing.

“You can’t see their throttle and brake pressure, you can only see their steering uh and for me, I was very smooth when it came to steering, but my my pedal inputs were very aggressive.”

He then revealed the stunning nickname his former race engineer gave to him.

Button continued: “What did my engineer call me?

“Like a duck, basically, so very calm on the surface and all the work’s being done underneath the water with my feet.”

His engineer in question, Tom Stallard further explained what he meant by the “duck” nickname

As quoted by The Race in May, Stallard said: “Everyone always said Jenson was the smoothest driver in the world, because they couldn’t see what his feet were doing.

“He drove like a duck, and his feet under the surface of the water were doing all kinds of things to keep the car balanced, such that he could be smooth with his hands.”

Button’s would-be successor – Piastri – currently sits fourth in the drivers championship, one point ahead of reigning champion and team-mate , but 91 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The Aussie has scored two podiums so far this season, those coming in Japan and Miami, while he came fourth in Austria.
