FORMER Southampton player Jan Bednarek and his family have suffered a terrifying robbery ordeal in their Portuguese home.

An intruder armed with a knife reportedly threatened the Polish international before escaping with €150,000 (£130k) in jewellery.

The crime occurred around 9.30pm yesterday according to Portuguese press when the centre-back surprised the burglar as he returned from a restaurant with his wife Julia and daughter.

The 30-year-old and his loved ones were not harmed.

Portugal’s PSP police were called out initially and have now handed over the investigation into the incident at the family home in Porto to the Policia Judiciaria.

Bednarek, now playing for who have just won their 31st league title, has yet to make any comment on his social media.

Julia, who married the footballer in June 2022 after a one-year engagement, posted footage of the couple visiting a contemporary art gallery hours before the robbery. She has not commented yet either on yesterday night’s drama.

Bednarek joined on a five-year deal for a fee of £5million in July 2017, making his debut against in August that year in the Cup.

He was loaned to in September 2022 before being recalled to Southampton earlier than expected in January 2023 after making just three Premier League appearances.

During his time at his loan club he opened up on mental health struggles.

He left Saints supporters fuming with his first words as a Villa player following his deadline day move after saying he was “happy and excited” to be moving to a “bigger club.”

He joined Porto in July last year after eight seasons with his old club.
At international level he has featured in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as two European Championships.
