Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has stated that it is treasonous for the First Lady, Mrs. Remi Tinubu, to instruct Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State to turn off his microphone during an event in Ile-Ife.

Idam emphasized that it is inappropriate for the president's wife to give orders to the governor within his own state.

In a signed statement, Idam remarked that the Office of the First Lady should be reminded that it is a non-state actor, noting that the office lacks any basis in Nigerian law.

Oluremi Tinubu had threatened to turn off Governor Adeleke's microphone for singing at the event.

The incident occurred in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Sunday, during the First Lady’s installation as Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua.

A viral video on social media showed the governor singing worship songs while delivering a speech at the event.

In response, Idam stated: “Give your speech and stop singing, or I will turn off the mic.”

“Yesterday, the Executive Governor of Osun State was, in a brigadier manner, bullied off the stage at a public function in Ile-Ife, in his own state, by the wife of the President. As is often the case, many Nigerians have understandably shown little concern about this incident.

“Such news does not significantly engage the youth of Nigeria; it is not about leaked sex tapes, marital issues, nude videos, or other trivial matters.

“The fact is, it is mutinous, if not treasonous, for a non-state actor like the president's wife to issue commands to an elected governor in his own state. This behavior may reflect an exaggerated display of influence or arrogance, both of which must be condemned.

“The Office of the First Lady must be reminded that it is a non-state actor and lacks any foundation in Nigerian law. It is neither recognized by the Constitution nor established by any statute.

“As a result, it holds no official powers, cannot issue orders, cannot represent the government at public events, and is legally incapable of making speeches or pronouncements against an elected public officer, not even against an elected ward counselor, who is legally superior to her office.

“It must be stressed that the presidency is neither hereditary nor passed down through marital connections.

“The behavior exhibited toward the Governor by the president's wife is unacceptable in a constitutional democracy and must be condemned. Nigeria cannot be allowed to descend into anarchy, where relatives of office holders assume powers as if they were entitled to them.”
