The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has warned that lawmakers who remain in opposition parties face significant challenges in attracting development to their constituencies.
According to DAILY POST, the Speaker shared this perspective while welcoming Hon. Frank Omosigho, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Oredo East constituency, who recently switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a plenary session on Monday, December 15, 2025, Agbebaku expressed that it is quite perilous for a member of the House to stay in opposition. He emphasized that lawmakers should prioritize their constituents' needs over personal ambitions.
“One of our colleagues has just joined the moving train—the honorable member representing Oredo East. He has officially joined the All Progressives Congress, increasing our APC representation in the House to 21,” he stated.
“I would like to congratulate the member from Oredo East. Remaining in opposition is very risky. It has always been this way. If you find yourself in opposition, it becomes extremely challenging to bring development to your area. It’s not about you; it’s about your people. That is the reality,” he remarked.
He further shared that he himself faced insults and criticism from his constituents when he transitioned from PDP to APC.
Agbebaku acknowledged that the newly defected lawmaker might be experiencing similar verbal criticism and asserted, “Today, I believe my people are quite pleased with my decision.”
“When I defected to APC, I faced various attacks. However, today, my constituents are reaping the benefits of democracy. Had I remained in opposition, I doubt I would have been able to accomplish what I have in my area. It’s not about me; it’s about my people,” he concluded.
The Speaker also announced that the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, is scheduled to present the 2026 appropriation bill to the House on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
With Hon. Frank Omosigho's defection to APC, the ruling party now holds 21 seats in the House, while the PDP has only three members remaining: Charity Aiguobarueghia Ighodala, Minority Leader; Maria Edeko, former Deputy Speaker; and Natasha Osawaru Irobosa.
