The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to seek both local and international assistance to address the issue of insecurity in Nigeria or to resign with dignity.

Ini Ememobong, the Fractional National Publicity Secretary of the party, made this statement on Sunday.

The party emphasized the need for the government to formulate a thorough plan to tackle this challenge, rather than resorting to a simplistic measure of closing schools to prevent further kidnappings and gain cheap political advantage.

It noted that under the APC-led Tinubu administration, Nigerians have experienced a surge in kidnappings across various states in Northern Nigeria.

The party stated that each incident of kidnapping has left behind a legacy of sorrow, tears, blood, fear, and profound anguish for the families affected and their communities.

Furthermore, it pointed out that in reaction to the rising insecurity, different state governments in the impacted region have taken desperate actions, while the federal government has yet to provide any clear guidance.

“We are aware that the closure of schools in these regions is already being enacted by some state governments and is currently under consideration by the Federal Government.

“We caution that this closure, if pursued, like many of this administration’s quick-fix solutions to serious governance challenges, will amount to a complete capitulation to terrorists, whose primary objective is to close schools and deny children access to formal education, which they deem forbidden.

“If schools are closed, the terrorists' goal would have been unintentionally achieved.

“What is even more concerning is that when these tragic incidents occur, the administration’s response is often tepid and lacking empathy.

“We urge the Federal Government to promptly fund and execute the National Policy on Safety, Security, and Violence-Free Schools, which should be based on community intelligence and rapid security responses, capable of anticipating and addressing attacks on schools.

“We again remind President Bola Tinubu and the entire APC-led administration that ensuring the security of lives and property is the fundamental responsibility of any government. If at any point the government is unwilling, unable, or incapable of fulfilling this primary duty, it must either seek assistance (locally or internationally) or resign honorably, if it is sincere and accountable,” the statement concluded.
