The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has denounced the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly, calling for the dismissal of Nyesom Wike from his role as FCT Minister.
IYC President, Alaye Theophilus, made this announcement during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, just hours after lawmakers commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The Ijaw group characterized this action as entirely against the wishes of the people of Rivers State.
It urged President Bola Tinubu to remove FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of inciting unrest in the oil-rich region.
“Recent events in Rivers State have exposed the true adversaries of the state. We therefore demand the immediate dismissal of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike,” the group declared, stating that Wike is “not a genuine democrat but an adversary of democracy and effective governance.”
The council also voiced its support for Governor Fubara’s re-election campaign and commended President Tinubu for his initiatives aimed at revitalizing Nigeria.
“The IYC, together with the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality, stands resolutely behind the re-election campaigns of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 and Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term in Rivers State,” Theophilus remarked.
DAILY POST previously reported that the Rivers State House of Assembly officially commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu, both members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday.
The lawmakers accused the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule indicating that the notice of allegations would be delivered to the governor within seven days.
