Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru Usani, has expressed his belief that his new party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), can achieve in 2027 what the All Progressives Congress (APC) accomplished in 2015 by defeating an incumbent president.
In an interview with DAILY POST on Thursday, Usani stated that there is nothing remarkable about unseating an incumbent, noting that Nigeria's political history has already demonstrated its feasibility.
He recalled that the APC, which was then a struggling opposition party, accomplished what many referred to as a political miracle by ousting President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general elections.
He remarked, “People thought it was impossible to defeat an incumbent president, but it happened in 2015. That same achievement will be replicated in 2027, both at the Cross River level and nationally.”
Usani rejected recent media reports suggesting he had been suspended by the ADC, asserting that he continues to serve as the party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-South region.
“I am speaking to you as the National Vice Chairman of our party in the South-South. Such a suspension does not exist. The individuals involved had to justify what they were paid to do,” he explained.
The former minister also indicated that he and his party are not concerned about the recent wave of defections to the APC, describing these moves as driven by fear rather than genuine conviction.
“We’re not worried about defections to the APC. Our coalition party is established, and we are moving ahead,” he stated confidently.
Usani emphasized that the ADC and its allies are creating a credible alternative platform that will surprise many in the 2027 general elections, adding that the political landscape is shifting in favor of Nigerians who are once again seeking change.
