- The Importance of Bold Decisions
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) declared on Thursday that he possesses the “political will” to make bold decisions as a leader.
Wike reflected on a previous decision he made against the Nigeria Police Force, noting that nothing catastrophic occurred as a result.
He recounted how he intervened to stop the police from constructing buildings beneath high tension cables in Abuja, stating that “everything has been calm” since he made that choice.
Wike shared these insights while delivering his keynote address at the 2025 Innovate Africa Conference in Abuja.
Addressing the theme, ‘Reimagining Africa’s Leadership and Investment’, Wike emphasized the challenges leaders face when making tough decisions.
He remarked: “I have faced leadership challenges; when a leader fails to make decisions during tough times, that person should not be considered a leader.”
“True leadership is demonstrated by making decisions that ensure funds are available from the federal level to the states. What the states do with those funds is not the concern of those entrusted with leadership.”
“As the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, I am fully committed, without apologies, to ensuring that Abuja competes with other global cities.”
“I have made decisions that many questioned: Why would he do this? Can he handle this?”
“Just three days ago, I learned that the police were building houses under high tension wires, and the Development Control department intervened to stop it.”
“I personally went to the site and stated that under my leadership, this would not be permitted.”
“I instructed the Development Control to demolish the structures, assuring them that nothing disastrous would happen. As I speak to you now, everything is calm. That is what leadership is about. It does not matter who is involved. It is simply leadership.”
“People approach us and acknowledge that certain actions are wrong; what you are doing is incorrect. This issue transcends political party affiliations.”
