The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday provided an explanation for the arrest of activist politician Omoyele Sowore.
Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stated that Sowore's arrest was necessary to ensure fairness in the prosecution of individuals involved in Monday's #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
Hundeyin made this announcement while speaking to journalists in Abuja.
“If we proceed to charge some individuals in court while leaving out the person who led them into that action, essentially their leader, the prominent protester who directed them and took them into the restricted area, that would not be just.
“That is why, in the interest of fairness and to ensure justice is served, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today,” the police spokesperson explained.
He assured that Sowore would not be held beyond the legally permitted duration, emphasizing that he would be brought before a court.
“Like the others, he won’t be with us for long. He won’t spend more than 24 hours in our custody. Once we finalize the charges, he will face prosecution.
“In fact, if everything proceeds as planned, our intention is to ensure that he is prosecuted today. He will appear in court today,” he added.
