‘I respect him’ – Ronaldo picks right coach for Portugal after Nations League triumph

Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portugal national football team, has picked Roberto Martinez as the “right coach”; for the Seleção das Quinas.

Ronaldo spoke after Martinez guided Portugal to win the UEFA Nations League title after beating Spain on the final on Sunday.

The 40-year-old was hitting out at critics who criticized the former Belgium manager in the past.

Speaking to the media after the Nations League final, the former Juventus and Manchester United forward said (via OJogo): “What they [critics] did to the coach [Martinez] wasn’t fair, they beat him up a lot.

“He is the right coach, the passion he puts into the games not being Portuguese, I respect him even more.

“He deserves it [Nations League trophy, it is about respecting him more and letting him work calmly, because after winning this competition, we’ve to have merit,”; he said.

Martinez was appointed as Portugal’s manager following the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup which Argentina won.

The 51-year-old Spanish replaced Fernando Santos as coach of the Portugal national team.
