The ousted National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has asserted that he continues to be the legitimate chairman of the party.
In a statement released on Friday in Abuja by his Special Assistant (Legal), Abubakar Baba, the challenged SDP leader labeled his reported expulsion from the party as unlawful, null, and void.
He denounced the action as a desperate attempt by fraudsters to destabilize the party, maintaining that the alleged expulsion was unconstitutional and without merit.
DAILY POST recalls that Gabam, along with the National Youth Leader, Dr. Ogbonna Uchechukwu, and several others, was expelled on Thursday following a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.
In response to the situation, Gabam stated, βThe said meeting is illegal, null and void, and has no effect whatsoever.β
Referencing Article 13 (iv) of the SDP Constitution, which grants only the National Chairman the authority to preside over meetings of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Working Committee, and National Caucus, he declared: βI remain the national chairman of the SDP. Any meeting held or led without the approval of the duly recognized chairman constitutes a serious violation of the constitution and a blatant attempt to seize legitimate authority.β
Gabam also criticized the National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, for allegedly notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the supposed decisions of the meeting, describing this action as a violation of Part 2 (12) 3 of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022.
