House of Reps denies summoning Benue, Zamfara Speakers

Published on May 15, 2025 at 05:23 PM

The House of Representatives has distanced itself from claims that it summoned the Honourable Speakers of the Benue and Zamfara State Houses of Assembly over ongoing political disputes in the two states.

In a letter dated Thursday, May 8, 2025, and signed by Professor Jake Dan-Azumi, Chief of Staff to the Honourable Speaker, the House stated categorically that it had no record of any referral of the matter to its Committee on Public Petitions.

The letter, addressed to the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, acknowledged the group’s correspondence on the matter but stated that no such summons was issued.

“I am directed to acknowledge receipt of your letter concerning the summons issued to the Honourable Speakers of the Benue and Zamfara State Houses of Assembly, and to respectfully inform you that the House of Representatives has no record of a referral of the matter to the Committee on Public Petitions,”;; the letter read in part.

The House also reaffirmed its respect for the autonomy of State Legislatures as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and expressed regret over any misunderstanding that the issue may have caused.
