The Presidency provided an update on the health status of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, on Monday.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, stated that Edun assured him he was making a good recovery.
In a post on X, Dare mentioned that he received this assurance during a phone call.
He wrote: “I just got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, in Abuja. While enjoying a bowl of Amala, we spoke for a few minutes, and he assured me he was feeling better. I wished him a swift recovery. Sunday Dare Alamala Reporting. @OfficialAPCNg.”
On Sunday, Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Edun, who is the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, was recovering at his home in Abuja after falling ill.
Onanuga dismissed rumors that Edun had suffered a stroke or had been sent abroad for medical treatment.
“Yes, he’s unwell. Wale Edun is approximately 69 years old. He suddenly became ill. As we speak, he is in Nigeria and is recuperating. He is here,” Onanuga stated.
This clarification came after speculation arose that President Tinubu was contemplating replacing Edun following reports of his health issues that surfaced late last week.
Previously, the Presidency had confirmed that Edun would not be attending the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.
It was noted that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, would lead Nigeria’s delegation in his absence.
