The Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (CHURAC), Alaowei Cleric Ebikonbowei, stated on Saturday that the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, should grant Mazi Nnamdi Kanu a Presidential Pardon.
Ebikonbowei made this appeal in a statement sent to our correspondent in Warri.
The legal expert expressed, “We cannot afford to deal with another wave of insecurity on top of what we are already experiencing.”
“Our security system appears to be overwhelmed by the current situation in the Northern region of the country.”
According to Ebikonbowei, granting a pardon to Kanu would foster peace in the nation, particularly in the South East.
“Keeping Nnamdi Kanu in detention while condemning separatist movements will not resolve the issue of insecurity.”
“He is greatly admired by his community, and thus, a presidential pardon is the most effective solution to prevent further insecurity.”
Ebikonbowei acknowledged that Nnamdi Kanu is responsible for his current predicament, stating, “He had ample opportunity to defend himself but dismissed his entire legal team, including esteemed Senior Advocates.”
“He disrespected everyone, including the court where he was being tried. Who behaves like that?”
“I hope he can now trust his lawyers and allow them to represent him in the appellate court. I won’t elaborate on the appeal process. Let his legal team handle the appeal of the judgment.”
