The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed his condolences to the families of the 25 individuals who lost their lives in a boat accident in the Nguru local government area, calling the incident a significant loss for both the families and the state.
In a statement released by his media aide, Mamman Mohammed, Buni offered prayers for the souls of the deceased and instructed that immediate medical attention be provided to the survivors.
“It is with a heavy heart that I receive the shocking and devastating news of the boat accident in the Nguru local government area, which has resulted in the loss of 25 lives, with 14 others still unaccounted for and 13 rescued,” he stated.
“I pray that more survivors will be found to reunite with their families,” Buni added.
The tragic incident reportedly took place on Saturday when a canoe carrying 52 passengers from Adiyani in Jigawa State to Garbi in the Nguru Local Government Area capsized, leading to the deaths of 25 individuals.
He further urged caution against the overloading of canoes and vehicles to prevent avoidable accidents.
The Governor has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate assistance to the families of the victims while search and rescue operations continue.
