National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting Sussex Police with an incident on the A27 near Woodmancote and have closed the eastbound carriageway at Emsworth.

The westbound carriageway has been closed at Chichester by units from Sussex Police themselves.

Traffic caught within the closures is being turned and released via the rear of the queue.

The AA said that there were “severe delays”, with additional congestion on the A259 as drivers attempt to divert.

A statement shared on the Sussex Police social media site said: “The A27 is currently closed in both directions at Southbourne while we respond to a medical incident.

“Emergency services are responding to concerns for a girl’s welfare.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area or find alternative routes.

“Officers have thanked the public for their patience while we respond to this incident.

“We will provide more details when we have them.”

Southern Rail UK said: “We’ve been made aware that the A27 between Chichester and Emsworth is closed due to a police incident.

“If you’re travelling between Havant and Barnham, you may need to take an alternative route or wait for the next available train. The next available train may be delayed.”
