The state chairpersons of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have requested automatic and lifetime membership in the party’s National Executive Council (NEC).
The Forum of APC Chairpersons also seeks participation in other significant decision-making bodies of the party, arguing that their experience and grassroots connections are crucial for fostering internal democracy.
In a memorandum submitted to the APC Constitution Amendment Committee during its initial public hearing in Calabar on Tuesday, the forum stated that state chairpersons should retain their NEC positions even after leaving office to continue contributing to the party's development.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Bayelsa State APC Chairman Dr. Dennis Otiotio expressed that the forum also desires clearly defined constitutional roles for deputy chairpersons.
“We firmly believe that as more individuals join our esteemed party, state chairpersons should be designated as statutory members of the NEC,” Otiotio remarked.
“They should continue to be part of it even after their tenure because of the valuable experience they would have gained.”
The forum additionally proposed that newcomers to the APC should remain ordinary members for over three months before being eligible to run for any party position.
It also suggested that in states with multiple former governors, the oldest among them should be acknowledged as the party leader, instead of allowing a newly defected sitting governor to automatically assume that role.
