Afrobeat legend, Femi Kuti, has disclosed that the key to lasting success in the music industry is creating meaningful music.
The 63-year-old veteran artist shared that his enduring relevance over the past four decades stems from his commitment to composing intentional music.
He urged young musicians to remain humble and learn the art of crafting quality music, cautioning that neglecting this could result in diminishing fame and wealth as they age.
In a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Kuti encouraged emerging artists to consider their future while creating music.
The interviewer posed the question: “What do you believe is harming the Nigerian music industry today?”
Kuti responded: “When the foundation is unstable, nothing can thrive. I appreciate what young artists are doing, but what will they do when they reach 50?
“The reason I have garnered respect is that I continue to exhibit skill and energy. I am dedicated. When I play my saxophone, you can tell that I am dedicated. I compose all my music. You (young artists) purchase your songs and refuse to learn. Music is akin to medicine. Legends like Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and others are celebrated because they are committed to their craft and practice diligently.
“However, young artists often rush to produce music solely for chart success. You may have a few hits now, but being young blinds you to the risks – the next generation will have their stars, and you may fade away.
“I can confidently say I’m still touring because my fans introduce me to their children and grandchildren. You will find both elderly fans and kids at my concerts. There are individuals who have supported me for 15 to 20 years and still bring my albums for me to sign. Why is that? It’s all about consistency. I have something valuable to offer. If you are not writing your own music and are merely purchasing songs and hopping from one trend to another, will you still be doing that at 40?”
