Fear has permeated among residents of Lagos following the apprehension of two suspected fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the state, according to PREMIUM TIMES.

The suspects, identified as Modu Gana and Ibrahim Dugge, were taken into custody on Sunday, December 21, by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).

A security source familiar with the operation revealed that the arrests took place in the Apapa area of Lagos at approximately 8:45 a.m.

The source confirmed that both individuals are currently in detention and undergoing interrogation.

Investigations indicated that the arrests were prompted by intelligence reports suggesting that the suspects had moved from Nigeria’s conflict-affected North-east to Lagos.

Attempts to secure official confirmation from the SSS were unsuccessful, as a representative from the agency’s media unit stated that the incident had not yet been formally communicated to them.

Since the reassignment of its former spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the SSS has adopted a low-profile media strategy, citing operational effectiveness as the rationale.

At the time of this report, the reason for the suspects’ presence in Lagos remains unclear.

There is also no immediate evidence indicating plans to execute attacks in the commercial center.

Nonetheless, security analysts have cautioned that ISWAP has been attempting to broaden its operations beyond its established strongholds in the North-east.
