Parkin made 340 appearances across the EFL during his career, netting over 100 times in those games.

But after calling it a day following a two year stint in the National League North with York City, the striker focused on scoring runs instead of scoring goals.

Parkin had been playing for local cricket club Dartfield in recent years, but has now retired his bat after scoring 133 not out in his final game for their second XI against Green Moor in League Division Six.

Revealing his reasoning behind retiring, Parkin candidly told the Barnsley Chronicle : “I’m c**p. I’ve not scored many runs so I’ve thrown my teddy out of the cot and that’s me done.

“I had a new knee in November so I am costing them 20 runs in the field anyway so I have to score 20 to break even.

“I only turn up once every month or so. I do after dinner speaking on a Saturday and Barnsley town centre is good on a Saturday afternoon now.

“It’s been a long time coming scoring some runs and it didn’t make me change my mind.”

Parkin has admitted he might give up another sport too, adding: “I still play but I am bang average at that too so I might knock that on the head as well.”
