The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has dismissed Fred Itua from his position as Chief Press Secretary.
According to a report from DAILY POST, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, announced this decision in a statement dated December 4, 2025, which was shared with journalists in Benin City.
Ikhilor did not provide a specific reason for the dismissal, but he introduced Dr. Patrick Ebojele as the new Chief Press Secretary.
Sources indicate that Fred Itua was reportedly removed by the Governor due to unsatisfactory performance.
Members of the opposition, specifically from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor and Shadrach Udugbai, have been urging the governor to revamp his media team.
Their calls for change resulted in the replacement of the former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Paul Ohonbamu, with Prince Kassim Afegbua.
Ikhilor stated that the appointment of Dr. Ebojele underscores the current administration's commitment to enhancing and strengthening communication channels between the Government and the citizens of Edo State, ensuring clarity, transparency, and effective dissemination of government policies, programs, and activities.
The statement included: “The Edo State Government wishes to inform the general public that His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Executive Governor of Edo State, has approved the appointment of Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick as the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor.
“Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick is a distinguished journalist, public administrator, researcher, and lecturer with an impressive professional background in media practice, public affairs, and academia.
“Dr. Ebojele’s journalism experience includes working with reputable Nigerian media organizations, where he served as the Edo/Delta Correspondent for Channels Television, along with correspondent positions at New Nigerian Newspaper, Champion Newspaper, and Comet Newspapers.
“Dr. Ebojele will succeed Mr. Fred Itua, who will await further reassignment following the handover. The Government expresses gratitude to Mr. Itua for his contributions and service.”
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Ebojele was a lecturer in the Department of Public Administration at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.
