Taking to social media, Lauren shared a clip of her interview outfit and it seemed to look professional enough.
She wore an oversized grey trench coat along with flared suit trousers, a wool turtle-neck jumper, and pointed-toe heeled boots.
Lauren finished the look off with a black tote bag, a gold necklace and a few rings.
But she was informed it wasn’t good enough.
Lauren wrote: “Wore this to an interview, and they said it was fine for now but was to at the office if I were to be hired.”
“As in “too casual, underdressed, and too much jewellery” for a desk job… Chat am I crazy?”
After asking for advice, Lauren was overwhelmed by the response as her video went viral with over 5.3 million views.
While some tried to pick holes in her outfit, many were unable to spot anything wrong.
One person wrote: “If they don’t pay formal salary look elsewhere girl.”
Another commented: “This is the most appropriate attire. What did they want you to wear?”
“Hope they pay you enough to buy business formal,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “I’m genuinely so confused on what’s wrong with it.”
“God forbid an employee has any sense of style,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “This is not even casual. This is dressy. What type of job requires business formal anymore?”

Lauren was quick to tell her side after receiving so many comments on her outfit.
She said she was surprised at how controversial the video had become and while she wasn’t ‘bashing’ the company she was baffled at the strict dress code.
She continued: “I was just surprised because 1) it was a goods brand, not finance, , government 2) the position I applied for is fully digital/Ecom and is not customer-facing whatsoever 3) they told me they consider themselves ‘startup vibes.’
“In my previous corporate experiences (including at major companies) the dress code was always business casual at most for non-client facing teams so I wrongfully assumed that would be the case as well.”
While we haven’t had an update on what she plans to wear at the new role, you can follow her on TikTok @ thelaulight to find out.
