Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has warned the youth in the state to refrain from attacking or making baseless accusations against the family of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
He urged them to show respect for their leaders and to adopt peaceful methods for resolving conflicts.
The governor issued this warning following a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday by members of the Akwa Ibom Youth Coalition at the Government House in Uyo, regarding concerns raised by a female member of the Greater Akpabio family.
In a statement released by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, on Thursday, it was noted that the protesters had submitted a letter detailing their concerns, which was accepted by the Head of Service, Effiong Essien, on behalf of Governor Eno.
Governor Eno acknowledged citizens' right to voice their opinions but cautioned that family matters should remain private and not escalate into public controversies that could damage the reputations of respected leaders.
“We should not interfere in family matters that are meant to be resolved privately,” he stated.
“Nonetheless, we ask our youth not to tarnish the characters of the leaders that have been appointed for us by making unfounded allegations against them,” he added.
The governor's spokesperson emphasized the need for civility, unity, and respect for leaders, regardless of political affiliation, highlighting that these values are integral to the identity of Akwa Ibom.
“Our leaders, regardless of their party affiliations, are valuable assets, and we must avoid actions that could undermine their positions in society,” he continued.
He also affirmed that both the Senate President's office and his person bring significant pride to the people of Akwa Ibom and should be treated with the utmost respect.
While calling for restraint, the governor encouraged the youth to seek dialogue and peaceful resolutions for their grievances, emphasizing that mutual respect and peace are essential for the state's progress and development.
The protest and Governor Eno’s intervention occurred in response to a murder allegation made against Akpabio by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Patience Akpabio.
According to DAILY POST, the Afe Nkuku Annang, the highest authority of traditional rulers in Annang land, Akwa Ibom State, has summoned the sister-in-law and her husband, Ibanga Akpabio, to appear before them within seven days concerning alleged defamatory and inciting social media posts directed at the Senate President.
A communiqué released at the conclusion of their meeting on Monday indicated that the monarchs expressed serious concern over what they termed “malicious and reckless” comments allegedly made by Mrs. Akpabio, accusing the Senate President of being connected to multiple murders in Akwa Ibom State during his tenure as governor.
“The Afe Nkuku Annang hereby issues a seven-day ultimatum for Barrister Ibanga Akpabio and his wife, Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio, to appear before the Afe Nkuku Annang for clarification and potential cleansing in line with Annang traditional customs and culture. Failure to comply will result in severe punitive measures,” the traditional leaders stated.
