The North-Central All Progressives Congress Forum has rejected a resolution passed by APC leaders in Plateau State opposing the acceptance of Governor Caleb Mutfwang into the party.
During a stakeholders meeting in Jos on October 17, 2025, the Plateau APC leaders endorsed a motion, introduced by former Deputy National Secretary Barrister Festus Fuanter, which opposed Mutfwang’s potential defection to the APC.
“I hereby move the motion against the acceptance of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang into the APC,” Fuanter stated. The motion was unanimously supported by the stakeholders.
This development followed earlier appeals from the North-Central APC Forum encouraging Mutfwang to join the APC.
In response to the Plateau APC leaders' position on Tuesday, the North-Central APC Forum, composed of APC stakeholders from the North-Central states, stated that those opposing Mutfwang’s defection are acting out of self-interest rather than the party's welfare.
In a statement released to journalists in Abuja by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, a member of the APC campaign council during the 2023 election, the North-Central APC Forum reiterated its call for Mutfwang to exit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), labeling it a sinking party.
The Forum pointed out that its members from Plateau State were not invited to the stakeholders meeting where the resolution to prevent Mutfwang’s defection was made.
Instead, it noted that many of the so-called “Plateau APC stakeholders” who passed the resolution are individuals who failed to secure votes for the APC in their polling units during the last election but are now positioning themselves for federal appointments in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The Forum specifically highlighted that the APC's gubernatorial running mate in the state during the 2023 election lost both his polling unit and ward to the PDP but is currently among those leading the opposition to Mutfwang joining the party.
Part of the statement read, “This is not merely about gathering to reject Governor Caleb Mutfwang. The real issue is who can secure the governorship seat for the party? Among those who gathered to oppose Governor Mutfwang, only a few are genuine, capable party members. It is not about selecting individuals from certain ethnic groups for federal appointments. The key question is whether they can deliver.”
The North-Central APC Forum proposed that appointments and rewards within the party should be based on electoral performance.
The Plateau chapter of the APC had criticized Mutfwang after the governor claimed he was under pressure to join the APC over the weekend.
The Plateau APC dismissed the governor’s assertions, challenging him to identify those pressuring him to join the party.
However, defending Mutfwang, the North-Central APC Forum confirmed that the governor is indeed under pressure to join the APC.
The Forum stated that its calls for Mutfwang to join the APC are supported by influential figures within the Presidential Villa.
