Residents have protested the bases and said the UK territory makes the region “more of a target“.

“Say it loud, say it clear, British bases out of here” was chanted by around 200-300 demonstrators in the capital of Nicosia yesterday.
One local, Shona Muir, said: “I think that we’d be a lot safer without them here,” while holding up a British Bases Out banner.”
“I don’t think anyone anywhere in the world would be in any position of accepting the presence of bases on the island…given the clear concern, given the way things have moved forward.”
This comes as Treasury spokesman: has blasted Sir for his “failure to be a reliable ally” to the US.
He added that this has put the Special Relationship “under a lot of strain”.
