Now the dust has settled, Daniel, 46, took fans for a look behind-the-scenes of the spectacular episode.

It was emotional in more ways than one as the actor returned to the old studio in Leeds for the first time in 21 years.

He played Ivan Jones in Emmerdale long before taking the role of priest Billy in Corrie.

Daniel filmed his exit scene at 11pm and wore thermals and a dry robe to combat the cold and drank from a thermos full of tea.

He declared: “Let’s go kill Billy,” before joining co-star Allison King, who rested her chin on his shoulder and kissed his cheek.

The actor finished the clip by writing: “Goodbye family. Thank you for the last 11 years. It’s been a ride I shall hold dear to my heart forever.”

The Corriedale crash drama unfolded as a drunk Carl Webster left his sister Debbie’s wedding in a fit of rage after finding out that she had forgotten to tell him about his mum Elaine’s message just weeks before she died.

Before he took off, dementia-sufferer Debbie jumped in the car and pleaded with Carl to slow down.

But he lost control and crashed into other vehicles. He then dragged Debbie into the driving seat and tried to flee – before passing out on the roadside.

In another car, Mackenzie Boyd ploughed into a field with pregnant wife Charity, and found himself impaled to his seat by a metal pole.

Meanwhile, murderer John Sugden slipped away from his car with a gun and tried to make his escape before Aaron Dingle could raise the alarm.

In a minibus carrying other Corrie residents home from Debbie’s wedding, most managed to escape but Billy was left trapped by his seat belt.

As he tried to get out, Theo Silverton arrived and clipped Billy back in before leaving him to burn alive in a horrifying first death of the episode.

Viewers were left in floods of tears at the callous moment.

One wrote: “Theo belting Billy back up and leaving him to die oh I need this man to rot in prison.”

A second posted: “BILLY SAYING HIS F****** OWN LAST RITES HAS DONE ME IN, I’m in tears.”

A third said: “#Corriedale Billy’s death had me in tears watching this.”

“That was horrifying, I’m in tears. Poor Billy,” a fourth added.

Last year The Sun revealed that bosses had decided to bring an end to Billy in a ‘story-based decision.’

Confirming his exit, Daniel said: “I have been working on Corrie for a quarter of my life.

“I have adored every minute I have been in that building and have never not looked forward to going into work.

“I love everyone who works on this show and whilst I am sad to be going, I am equally excited to see what the future holds.”

Corrie producer Kate Brooks said: “Billy will be involved in a major storyline over the coming months, which will see him tested in ways he never imagined, as friendships and his faith are pushed to the limit.

“We’re incredibly sad to bid farewell to Dan, who has been fantastic in some of Corrie’s biggest storylines over the past few years, most notably Paul’s MND.

“An actor of immeasurable talent and skill, and an absolute treasure behind the scenes – he will be missed by all of us on the cobbles.”

Actor Daniel joined the soap in 2014 as Sean Tully’s new love interest and quickly established himself as a popular character on the cobbles.
