Club World Cup: Messi reacts as Inter Miami records first win at tournament

Published on June 20, 2025 at 01:18 PM

Inter Miami captain, Lionel Messi, was a relieved man after they beat FC Porto 2-1 in the second group fixture at the 2025 Club World Cup.

The MLS side began the competition on a shaky note, following a goalless draw with Al Ahly in their opener.

But on Thursday, Messi provided the much needed inspiration, curling home a free-kick in the second half as they came from a goal down to win.

The result against the Portguese side ensures Inter Miami are in a good position to qualify for the next round.

“It was a great effort from the whole team. Not only did we defend, but we managed the ball well. We had a sour taste after the game against Al Ahly.

“This is a very important victory, and we’ll enjoy it,”; Messi told DAZN.
