The renowned hit-maker died earlier on Monday in a hospital after a brief illness, according to a spokesperson for his family.

In a statement issued on behalf of his wife and two children, they said: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Chris.

“He passed away peacefully in the hospital earlier today after a short illness, surrounded by his family.”

Chris reportedly underwent serious surgeries nine times, spending over six months in the hospital following his cancer diagnosis at the age of 33.

Discussing the shocking prognosis with Saga, he described it as his “Mount Everest” to overcome.

Chris shared: “The initial diagnosis hit me hard. I nearly had a nervous breakdown from the shock of it. That was the Mount Everest to conquer.

“When they told me it was pancreatic cancer, I couldn't believe it. It felt as though if your DNA indicates that you will have cancer, then that’s what will happen.

“They didn't think I would survive the first operation, but I was determined to do so for my wife and daughters.”

Reflecting on his life-saving operation, he revealed that his internal organs, including his pancreas, gallbladder, and part of his liver were “all removed.”

In a 1994 appearance on the Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing Christmas special, Rea mentioned that he had “never really gotten over” the diagnosis.

His most famous song, Driving Home for Christmas, has reappeared on the UK Singles Chart annually since 2007.

It has become a staple during the holiday season, reaching its highest position in 2021 when it peaked at number 10.
