New Year Superstitions
- Letting the old year out, the new year in: Open a back door or window just before midnight to let the old year’s troubles out, and the front door at midnight to welcome good fortune in.
- No empty cupboards: Keep bread in the breadbin and some money in your pocket/purse at midnight so the year doesn’t begin “empty”.
- Settle debts before midnight: Paying off what you owe (or at least not starting the year in arrears) is said to bring better fortune.
- Don’t take anything out on New Year’s Day: Avoid removing rubbish, lending items, or sweeping the house out, so you don’t “sweep out” your luck. Some say only things may come into the home that day.
- Make a noise at midnight: Bell-ringing, fireworks or banging pots and pans to drive away evil spirits and misfortune.
Fermented
Tim Spector, Professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, revealed the key to getting rid of a hangover was fermented drinks and food.
He explained: “Along with hydration and paracetamol, normal kefir can alleviate hangover symptoms — in fact, a 17-week study published in 2021 suggests that fermented foods significantly reduce inflammation due to their signalling to the immune system via the vagus nerve to calm down.”
