The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has vehemently condemned what it termed the barbaric and senseless extrajudicial killings of several young residents of Akinlalu town by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps.
The organization stated that this incident has plunged the entire community into mourning and represents one of the most severe instances of state-sponsored brutality in recent times.
In a statement signed by Olufemi Lawson, the General Secretary of the organization, CD referred to the killings as “a cold-blooded massacre that has once again revealed the deep-seated corruption, lack of training, and complete absence of professionalism within the Osun Amotekun Corps.”
According to Lawson, “It is unacceptable that a security force established to protect the citizens has now turned its weapons against innocent young individuals. The deaths of these youths, some of whom were siblings, is not only tragic but criminal. Those responsible must be held accountable without delay.”
The statement further accused the Corps Commandant of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, of gross misconduct and a long-standing reputation for wrongdoing.
“We are aware of Commandant Adekunle Omoyele's troubling history, even during his tenure with the Nigeria Police Force, where he was repeatedly associated with cases of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations. His ongoing reign of terror under the guise of Amotekun can no longer be tolerated,” CD asserted.
The group demanded that the Nigeria Police immediately arrest and investigate Commandant Omoyele concerning these recent killings and reopen all previous allegations of human rights abuses linked to him.
Additionally, it called upon the Osun State Government to urgently reorganize and reform the Amotekun Corps to prevent further abuses and restore public trust in community-based security operations.
“Justice must be served for the slain youths of Akinlalu. We will not rest until every officer involved in this atrocious act faces the full force of the law,” the statement concluded.
The Campaign for Democracy warned that any attempt to conceal or protect the perpetrators will encounter nationwide resistance from the civil society community and the victims' families.
“We owe it to the memory of these young Nigerians to ensure that their killers do not evade justice, regardless of their status,” Lawson added.
