A former plumber, he missed eight match darts before finally hitting double four – his NINTH match dart.

This led to hysterical moments as he leaped around the stage, having secured at least £25,000 in prize money this week in the East Midlands.

The match was lackluster and served as a poor advertisement for the sport, with Menzies averaging 84.45 while former world champion Cross, 35, could only achieve 81.27.

There were 42 missed doubles out of 60 attempts before Menzies, the world No. 32, progressed to the next round.

This marked his first TV appearance since it was announced that he and fellow dart player had ended their relationship after four years of dating.

Menzies stated: “I was trying to manage my adrenaline. I didn’t express any emotion until I won the first set. I really let loose after that.

“You have to show some emotion. There’s a limit, though. Sometimes I go overboard.

“I was calling myself every name under the sun as I missed the darts. I genuinely feared the worst.

“I tried to maintain belief. You have to fight and stay positive.

“It’s such a thrill to win.”

Fans watching from home appreciated Menzies’ enthusiasm.

One fan commented on X: “You can see how much that meant to him. I hope he goes far in this tournament. He truly deserves it.”

Another added: “Fair play to Cameron Menzies for winning that. He plays on the big stage as if he finds the experience torturous most of the time. I didn’t think he’d win after missing 5 match darts in the 3rd set. He held it together remarkably well.”
