The Brazilian military accorded President Bola Tinubu full military honours upon his arrival in South America.

The welcoming ceremony was organised by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Tinubu arrived in Brazil on Monday to begin a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The President, who flew in from Los Angeles, United States, was received at Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East; Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete; and Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu.

Tinubu’s visit was confirmed in a statement posted on X by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

Onanuga said Tinubu will be officially welcomed later on Monday at the Planalto Palace with full military honours before holding a private meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

According to the statement, the two leaders are expected to engage in expanded bilateral talks, witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding, MoUs, and hold a joint press conference.

Onanuga added that Brazil remains a key partner in Nigeria’s food security drive, citing projects such as the $2.5 billion JBS investment signed during the 2024 G20 Leaders’ Summit and the ongoing $1.1 billion Green Imperative agricultural mechanisation programme.
