Ali gave Nico three pieces of boxing advice over FaceTime
One year prior to his passing, Nico had a FaceTime call with his legendary grandfather during a good day amid his struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Recognizing that Ali was feeling well that day, Nico seized the opportunity to gain insights from one of boxing's greatest icons.
Ali's advice was straightforward yet impactful: stay in shape, engage in plenty of roadwork, and maintain a healthy diet.
Nico shared with SunSport: “He was having a really, really good day, and with Parkinson’s, every day can be unpredictable.
“It’s difficult to know which days will be good, but he was clear and coherent during our call.
“I have other recordings where he sounded like he did in his classic interviews, discussing comebacks and more.
“So, I took that chance and asked him for tips.”
Nico says he adheres to the heartfelt advice given to him by his hero and consistently follows it.
The middleweight fighter, who shares his grandfather's Muslim faith, stays in shape throughout the year as advised.
SunSport can confirm his commitment to healthy eating after dining with the Ali family, where Nico chose lean meats and fruits.
However, the 25-year-old prospect admits he is not fond of running, unlike Ali, who would run up to SEVEN MILES daily.
Nico stated: “I think the most crucial of the tips he gave was about roadwork. He loved running, but I dislike it.
“Nonetheless, it’s probably the most vital aspect for a fighter, as he emphasized.”
Nico is set to return to the ring on Wednesday in the Philippines.
He will compete against Thailand’s Kittisak Klinson in the same arena, which has been renovated, where Ali triumphed over Joe Frazier in their iconic trilogy fight.
Before the IBA event, Nico expressed: “It’s a tremendous and humbling experience.
“It’s a blessing that it’s been 50 years, half a century, and I just passed the arena, where people are still cheering and taking pictures of my grandfather and Frazier.
“It’s amazing that I can be part of this. These fights feel like family events for me.
“My parents are here, and for my mom especially, she witnessed her dad fight and now gets to see me in the same arena.
“While she wasn’t present for that specific fight, she will be there for mine.”
