Officers with the Enfield Police Department responded to a reported theft at a convenience store around 2:38am on March 11.
Bodycam footage showed an officer interacting with Rogers on a nearby street, where she told him she was bored and had stolen the drink, WFSB reported.
The officer was heard talking on the phone with another cop, wondering why Rogers was by herself in the middle of the night.
“It’s going to be a 12-year-old. So, I’m going to give her a courtesy ride back home and talk to mom and dad,” the officer said.
“I’ve got to talk to the parents because she… There’s more to it.”
The officer brought Rogers home and spoke with her mother, Melanie Federline, who revealed the 12-year-old had autism.
“She’s never done anything like this before,” her mother said.
“She’s not allowed out in the middle of the night.”
The officer ended up paying for the stolen drink and the gas station convenience store did not press charges.
One week later, Rogers was found dead inside her home.
Rogers was found naked from the waist down inside her room, with a blanket partially covering her and a few pills scattered around, CT Insider reported, citing police.
The 12-year-old’s cause and manner of death are still pending, but her stepfather, Anthony Federline, was arrested after his DNA was found on her in a sexual assault evidence kit performed.
Melanie, Rogers’ mother, became worried on March 18 when Rogers didn’t wake up at 10am and didn’t answer the knocks on her door.
Melanie said it wasn’t unusual for her daughter to lock her bedroom door at night, but said Rogers was typically a light sleeper and would wake up when she knocked.
She then opened her daughter’s locked bedroom door with a butter knife and found her face down.
Police discovered two pills on the floor near the door of Rogers’ room, and another on the desk with what appeared to be “Aspirin” marked on it.
Inside the bedroom of a 17-year-old male next to her bedroom, cops found a plate of blue pills in the open, with “numerous pill bottles lying around the desk in the room,” a search warrant reviewed by CT Insider said.
The capsules were marked as R3060, which Drugs.com said are identified as Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine, which can be used for ADHD and Narcolepsy.
Anthony had been working as a school bus driver for six months prior to his arrest, CT Insider reported.
Anthony and Melanie operated an energy healing website where they provided tarot card readings and performed spiritual healing online.
Rogers had attended local schools until September 2023 when her mother submitted a notice of withdrawal.
Melanie told CT Insider that her daughter was homeschooled, adding, Rogers was “healthy and well cared for.”
“She was the sweetest, feistiest little girl you’d ever meet.”
Officials said the investigation into Rogers’ cause of death and toxicology test results could take weeks.
