The Senate has officially announced the departure of Senator Benson Konbowei, who represents the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This announcement was made during the plenary session, just 24 hours after the state governor, Douye Diri, stepped down from the PDP.

While the Senate President was reading Senator Konbowei’s defection letter during the plenary, his colleague from Bayelsa West, Senator Seriake Dickson, who had previously pledged not to change his allegiance, reportedly walked out of the chamber.

With this recent development, the APC now holds a clear majority in the Senate, totaling seventy-four senators.

According to DAILY POST, on Wednesday at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House, Governor Douye Diri stated, “After extensive consultations, today, October 15, 2025, I wish to inform you that, in accordance with existing protocols, I hereby resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party.”
